I became a member of the National Writing Project in 2001. I entered with limited confidence. Since then, my confidence as a has writer increased greatly. My students entered my class thinking that writing would be tedious, and boring. Because of the ideas shared by other teachers and the support from the leaders of this fantastic project, my students learned to appreciate and enjoy writing. They found their voices through writing! They learned to express themselves in a manner they hadn't experienced before. Chills ran down my spine due to the joy and excitement we all experienced as true writers.
My relationship with the National Writing Project inspired me to create the Writing Portfolio Celebration in my school; which has been a showcase for five years now! Students and parents are proud to witness the writing accomplishments over the course of a year. They observe their growth, acknowledge their strengths as writers, and desire to work on weaknesses as well. Without National Writing Project MY confidence wouldn't have been there to help students recognize their gift as writers and create such an event.
I must also acknowledge that National Writing Project created a confidence within me that was contagious enough for my students to increase in their writing for state tests. My students have done quite well on the Benchmark writing exam. They don't worry if they know what to do, because I am a National Writing Project teacher, and my work prepares them for excellence! I am extremely grateful for my site. Thank you for the millionth time for all you have done for me and others.
