Teaching is a profession, not a hobby.  The teachers involved in National Writing Project try to improve every day, a goal I should hope we would like every teacher to pursue.  I personally have spent far more of my own salary on professional development than has been given me by NWP, but I probably wouldn’t have sought such professional development without the guidance from NWP.   What other program inspires teachers to put as much financial and personal energy into improvement?  Why is that not considered cost effective?
